Goerge Ernest Varrow was born in Sudbury in 1888 (Sudbury Q1-1888 4A:674), the son of William Harvey and Elizabeth VARROW (née MILLS).

1891 census...Aged 3, he was at "Sun Inn", Lower Station Road, Newmarket with his father William H.VARROW [27] licensed victualler, born Chigwell, Essex; his mother Elizabeth [27] born Lavenham; brother Bertram H.[1] born Newmarket.

He was admitted from private education in Newmarket to Soham Grammar School on 3rd February 1896, aged 7 years 11 months. Living with his grandmother (where is unknown at present). (He is recorded as Ernest G FARROW)(source:- http://www.sohamgrammar.org.uk/go-to-admission-register.htm)

1901 census...Aged 13, he was a pupil at Framlingham College. His parents were at "The White Hart, Newmarket with his sister Dorothy and cousin Gertrude MILLS [17] born Lavenham.

His father died in 1908.

1911 census...Aged 23, single, an ironmonger's assistant, he was boarding with Robert and Ada Dixon at Meadow Lane, Sudbury. His widowed mother, sister Dorothy and grandmother Marie MILLS were at 18 Beach Road, Clacton on Sea.

In 1913 he married Beatrice Ethel HAM [31-8-1885] (Lexden Q2-1913 4A:1287). CWGC has her address as "The Firs, High Street, Wivenhoe, the pension card has Hamilton Villa, Wyvenhoe.


He enlisted in Chatham when resident in Wivenhoe.
His Army service records are not available, "Soldier Effects" has no war gratuity recorded so I cannot work out when he enlisted. Of course, dying of his wounds in No 6 General Hospital in Rouen it is impossible to say exactly when or where he was wounded.

George Varrow is buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension,Rouen, grave O;5:I:5
and commemorated in St Mary's Church, Wivenhoe, Essex.
